Clinical & Forensic Psychology Mentoring for University Students

This mentoring pathway is designed for university students in psychology, social work, criminology, and related disciplines who want to develop specialist competencies for work in clinical and forensic mental health settings. The program is structured to bridge the gap between university training and real-world professional practice within complex mental health, criminal justice, and medico-legal environments.


The mentoring framework is grounded in nearly three decades of professional experience across criminal justice systems, complex trauma practice, and medico-legal assessment, beginning within the Crimes Unit of the New South Wales Police in 1997 and progressing through investigative work, advanced clinical training, psychiatric-oriented supervision, and doctoral-level research across Europe and the United States.


In addition to professional practice, this pathway is informed by more than twelve years of continuous university training and academic development. This extended period of rigorous study including doctoral research in Psychology (Psychiatry and Law), a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Master of Clinical Psychopharmacology provides a deep understanding of how students navigate university systems, postgraduate pathways, supervision requirements, and the transition from academic study into professional practice.


The integrated academic training reflects a practice model situated at the interface between law and psychiatry, where psychological expertise operates within both clinical and legal frameworks. Work at this interface requires practitioners to understand how mental health evidence, clinical formulation, and psychological assessment are interpreted within legal systems and court processes.


Across the course of professional training and practice, more than 9,000 hours of supervised clinical experience have been accumulated through structured supervision spanning undergraduate education through advanced clinical and doctoral research. The mentoring model reflects this same structured, cumulative approach to professional development.


This mentoring environment is intentionally supportive and designed to help students feel guided rather than overwhelmed as they progress through demanding academic pathways. Students are provided with mentorship, structured guidance, and professional insight into how clinical and forensic practitioners think, assess complex cases, and operate within multidisciplinary systems.
